This SGC VG/EX 4 grade reflects a balanced card with corner and surface wear typical of some handling before being stored in something protective. Their population report shows seven total encapsulated Dave Brown cards, with none higher! Havana-based tobacco company Tomás Gutiérrez published this set of 1923-24 winter league players and each back explains that collectors of complete sets could redeem them for a display album, so perhaps Dave lived in such a book.
The card is one of just 13 known to be printed with black ink on the reverse, as opposed to the standard brown. It has been theorized that print issues with the black ink bleeding through to the card front may have resulted in the manufacturer changing inks early in the print run. Regardless, the black back adds a degree of rarity to an already tough issue.
First excelling on independent teams in the 1910s, Dave Brown's star burned brightest for Rube Foster's American Giants, winner of the first three Negro National League titles (1920-22). He might well reach the Hall of Fame, given sufficient time and career examination by their relevant committees. This offers a rare shot at such a significant player, one who's even comfortable wearing heavy coats during his Caribbean season!
