Frederick C. "Sure Shot" Dunlap was a Second Baseman for Allegheny City (aka Pittsburg, without the H) from 1888 through 1890, collecting 201 hits in 220 games. He most likely got his nickname from King Kelly after Kelly watched Dunlap's repeatedly powerful and accurate throws to first base. Dunlap has 11 different
cards in
the N172 set. This
issue depicts Pittsburg's captain with his hands on his thighs as he looks down at the ball on the ground in front of him.
The card's qualifier of (MC) is due to the miscut which sliced off the right border, leaving the centering far east on the canvas. The remaining image is absolutely beautiful, though, with deep contrast between the dark printing of Dunlap's lower half and the ball on the ground, and the lighter shades of the background, the floor, and Dunlap's uniform. Corners are relatively sharp for the grade, but there does appear to be some edge chipping lining parts of each of the three full sides.
