Thomas Tarlton Brown played 17 years of Major League baseball. 1891 was his best year, in which he led the American Association in runs, hits, triples, at bats, stolen bases, and total bases for the Boston Reds. From 1885 through 1887, he was an outfielder for Allegheny City (aka Pittsburg, without the H), for whom he is depicted on this card. Brown has four cards in the N172 issue, with this version - depicting the Pittsburg Center Fielder about to make a catch, with his hands above his head - having the lowest population.

Centering is slightly south and east on the canvas, but a true border remains around the entire image on the front. The bold, dark printing has hardly faded in 135 years, and you can still see shadows on Brown's pants from the studio lighting. Some rounded corners, soft edges, and light staining on the back keep this card from grading even higher than it already has, but the aesthetic appeal of the card outweighs any issues with technical grade.
