"Handsome Jack" Carney played 69
games for the Washington Nationals in 1889, with 53 of those appearances
coming at First Base for the National League club. Carney has five different
cards in
the N172 set. This
issue depicts him holding a bat in his right hand, while his left hand rests at his side.
The
image is crisp and clear, with great contrast between the dark color of his sweater and shoes, the gradient background, and the light color of his pants and the ground. The corners are square, and while the edges display some light chipping, the top and bottom borders are clean. The (MK) qualifier is the result of an errant pencil mark on the back of the card, which does not affect the front. Again, an example of the grading company allowing irrelevant technical flaws to reduce their grade assessment while ignoring the above average image. Despite this, PSA has traded just two total examples of this 1887 N172 Old Judge, this being the higher of the two.
