"Handsome Jack" Carney played 69
games for the Washington Nationals in 1889, with 53 of those appearances
coming at First Base for the National League club. Carney has five different
cards in
the N172 set. This
issue depicts him holding a bat in his right hand, while his left hand rests at his side.
The
image is crisp and clear, with great contrast between the dark color of
his sweater and shoes, the gradient background, and the light color of
his pants and the ground. There is some staining on the front near the bottom corners, and more heavily on the back of the card, as well. Creasing is more evident as you look at the back of the card, which also has a capital "B" written in pencil near the top. However, the
scarcity of this example far outweighs any condition issues. SGC has graded just two examples of this card.
