Though he was playing out of his natural catching position since Yogi Berra was still behind the plate for the Yankees, 1957 was Elston Howard's first year as an All-Star, representing the American League as an outfielder in just his third full season in the integrated Major Leagues. Howard went on to be a 12-time All-Star, a 2-time Gold Glove winnner (both of which came as a Catcher), a 4-time World Series winner, and was the 1963 MVP.
He is featured here on card #82 of the 1957 Topps set. Tremendous centering, sharp corners, and great edges perfectly frame the extreme closeup of the versatile Yankee. Some light soiling around the perimeter is one of the only things keeping this card from grading even higher than it already has.
PSA has graded more than 1,100 total examples of this 1957 Topps card, with only 28 receiving a higher grade than the NM-MT+ 8.5 offered here of New York's Elston Howard.
