A journeyman pitcher who had a long stint in the minors in the early Thirties after breaking in for the 1929 season with Cleveland, Milt Shoffner found himself back in big leagues in 1937 and eventfully ended up as a World Series champion with the 1940 Reds, his last season in the major leagues. He's with the Bees though on his 1939 Play Ball card, as he was a late season waiver claim by Cincinnati in August of that year. Paper loss from scrapbook removal is seen on the reverse but the story is all about the obverse where a superb dark black ink signature has been graded PSA/DNA GEM MINT 10. It's the only signed example of this card in their database, for a player who died in 1978. The card originates from the Shibe Park collection of autographed cards, an original owner collection carefully collected by a teenage boy who, in 1939 and 1940, obtained many autographs from players arriving at the train station near Shibe Park, and continued for many years to obtain signatures in person and through the mail.
