Primarily a starter for the Pirates before enlisting in the Navy in 1944, Bob Klinger returned from the war and found himself as an early closer for the Red Sox in 1946-1947 before retiring after a half-season in the PCL the following year. This 1939 Play Ball has a scrapbook scarred back while Klinger has signed in blue with a neat hand on the obverse, PSA/DNA MINT 9 in grade.  Klinger was killed in a traffic accident in 1977 and was not someone who plied the later autograph show circuit. Paper loss is evident on the reverse, the result of scrapbook removal.  The card originates from the Shibe Park collection of autographed cards, an original owner collection carefully collected by a teenage boy who, in 1939 and 1940, obtained many autographs from players arriving at the train station near Shibe Park, and continued for many years to obtain signatures in person and through the mail.
