Exceptional horizontal Old Judge card of Hall of Famer John Montgomery Ward, one of the most popular players of his day and possibly the most influential player of the 19th Century. He led the formation of the first player's union, and also orchestrated the establishment of the Player's League. Originally a pitcher, he moved to shortstop after throwing his arm out. Ward married actress Helen Dauvray, who donated the game's first Championship trophy, named the Dauvray Cup.
Catalogued as pose #478-8 in the N172 issue according to The Photographic Baseball Cards of Goodwin and Company, the card has been graded raded EX 5 (MK) by PSA. A truly outstanding card with light image fading and some very minor wear, the "MK" qualifier speaks to a tiny "X" marked in pencil at the top of the card reverse. A wonderful example of an N172 Hall of Famer, one of the most popular and important figures in his era.
