Beautiful oversized (13 13/16" in diameter) porcelain plate, utilizing artwork from the well-known V.B. Hibberd Kline lithograph "Two Men Down," which dates to 1909. The image has been modified from the original lithograph (which pictures the baseball scene in the context of a ballpark with spectators), the image is colorful and relatively unblemished. Print on the reverse identifies the piece as hand-painted with markings "No. 5010 35 SM Germany." A stamp (3538R) likely identifies the manufacturer. The original metal wall hanger is affixed to the reverse, a wire hanger threaded through two small holes forged directly into the base of the plate. The plate is in outstanding condition, with a tiny area of restoration/touch-up at the upper right edge of the plate, likely a repaired chip. Though we have never seen nor handled an example of this plate, we believe it to date to the early part of the 20th Century based on the origin of the original lithograph.
