Outstanding litho print of a work by Edward Penfield published in 1908 by Collier & Son perhaps best recognized as the cover artwork from the popular 1911 hardcover book The Book of Baseball: From the Earliest Day to the Present Season. The colorful print pictures a batter in his stance at home plate catcher behind him intently looking at the pitcher. A few players sit on the bench in the background a single lazy cloud in the sky. Penfield was an American illustrator who is considered the father of the American poster. His work has been included in virtually every major book on American illustration or the history of the poster . His work has graced the covers of popular magazines and his advertising placards for Harper's New Monthly Magazine are widely-collected today. Measuring 11" x 14" the piece appears in outstanding condition with some minor wear at the corners. PLEASE NOTE this change to our original description: With our consignor's permission we have removed the piece from the foamcore backing to which it was mounted and shrinkwrapped. It had been affixed to the backing board with photo adhesive tape which was easily removed and did not take any of the paper with it. Examining the scan we have provided of the reverse one can see faintly discolored areas on the corners where the adhesive was affixed. Those areas are ever-so-slightly tacky; we expect that this will likely reduce over time. The piece itself remains in outstanding condition with no damage to the reverse.
