Hoboken"s Joe Jeannette due to the color of his skin was denied a shot at the World Heavyweight Championship but is still considered one of the greatest heavyweights of his era. He fought until he was 40 by his account approximately 400 bouts and retired to own a New Jersey gym where he trained future champion Jimmy Braddock. One of just three black athletes in the Turkey Red set Jeannette is the only one who is actually depicted in a boxing ring.A POOR condition card with a strong image is a highly sought-after commodity in this hobby among collectors who want to build affordable T3 or T9 sets but hope for uninterrupted relatively unblemished images. Such is the case with this Jeannette which suffers from tears at the top and bottom (most likely the result of thumbtacks) and a chipped-off upper left corner. Edge chipping and surface wear are also prevalent along with mild dirt staining on the face. Still the image quality is strong an excellent example of a difficult card and a great athlete from our home state of New Jersey.
