Although he played three seasons outside the state in the Eastern League and American Association, pitcher Pete Meegan was a California lifer, a member of the original Califonia Haverlys (with which he is pictured here) and continuing to play ball in San Francisco into the 1890s, when he even managed the Haverlys. "Steady" Pete was considered one of the best pitchers to come from San Francisco, and is pictured on one of the ultra-rare N172 Old Judge California League cards. This example of his card is well-worn, with damage to the mount and foxing similar to the other Haverlys cabinets featured in this auction. The image of Meegan, however, is perhaps the finest photograph of him extant, a crisp, close-up image with excellent contrast.
