Left-fielder Adolph Soher was a member of the original 1883 San Francisco Haverlys, with which he is pictured here, but records of him playing baseball beyond that season are sparse. Soher later became a clerk at the Post Office in San Francisco, where his dissatisfaction with his compensation caused him to begin gambling at the race track. His gambling additiction worsened, and after his father passed and left him very little fortune, Soher stole $22,000 from his family and left the state, becoming a fugitive from justice. The image on the card is a spitting image for a younger version of the portrait in a 1900 San Francisco Call and Post article just 17 years after his time with the Haverlys came to an end. A fascinating story.
