Phenomenal 1928 Type I photo of Ty Cobb in his final season with the Philadelphia Athletics and the last of his major league career. A beautifully rendered image with Cobb in sharp focus, expertly framed by the patriotic bunting and Yankee Stadium crowd. Pictured on April 20, 1928, the Georgia Peach stands directly facing the camera while displaying the classic split-grip batting technique for which he was famous. Cobb would go 2-4 that day with a triple in a 2-1 victory against the Bombers. He'd then follow up that performance with another three hits in a 10-0 rout the very next day, leading his Athletics to a sweep of the Yankees in their two-game series. Large 8" x 10" example shows typical handling wear in the form of creasing to corners and abrasion to borders but this does little to detract from overall quality of the presentation, which remains exceptional. Verso appears gently toned with a few areas of darker smudging. A short paper caption has been affixed along the bottom edge, dated to 4/20/28. A fresh to the hobby example from the significant Durham Find of Historic Baseball Photography. Authenticated and encapsulated as a Type I photo by PSA/DNA.
