"Mantle Listens to Cobb" was the headline throughout the country when this photo from Arthur Daley was first published nationwide on August 10, 1958. Taken prior to an Old-Timers' game at Yankee Stadium on August 9, Cobb offers some words of encouragement to Mantle whose batting average had dipped below .300 after hitting .365 the prior year. Offered is a phenomenal Type I photo featuring Daley's image of the Hall of Fame pair, with near-perfect clarity and tonal contrast as the aging Cobb symbolically passes the torch of hitting wisdom to a young Mantle, only 26 at the time. Large 8" x 9" photo is a tighter crop from other iterations we're aware of in the hobby, drawing the viewer in so close it's as if we're in on the conversation. Some general wear is visible to surface of this photo towards the right edge, mostly in the form of creasing that is largely only visible when photo is tilted towards a light source. A handwritten inscription has been applied to verso in pencil reading: "Cobb & Mantle - 'Words of Wisdom' - Old Timer's Day Aug. 1958 Yankee Stadium." Authenticated and encapsulated as a Type I photo by PSA/DNA.
