Brooklyn Dodgers backstop, Roy Campanella, receives his 1951 MVP honors in this Type I news service photo from baseball's Golden Era. New York was the epicenter of the baseball world from the late 1940's until the Dodgers and Giants abruptly skipped town following their 1957 campaigns. In the 11 seasons from 1947-57 World Series games were hosted by at least one New York club all but once (1948), and 13 league MVP awards were divided among the Dodgers, Giants, and Yankees during that span. Incredibly, Roy Campanella accounted for three of those awards, achieving the feat in 1951, 1953 and 1955. The presented 7" x 7.75" original news service photo hails from a ceremony for Campanella held on May 13, 1952 prior to a game at Ebbets Field. Photo appears to have been trimmed unevenly at the top edge and trace evidence of editorial masking removal is apparent around Campy's head. Verso includes credit stamping from the United Press beneath where a large paper caption, dated to 05/13/1952, has been affixed. A date stamp of "Jan 29, 1958" is also present - one day after Campanella's fateful automobile crash that tragically left him a quadriplegic. Authenticated as a Type I photo by PSA/DNA and their full LOA is included.
