In his first full season in professional baseball, 1933, Giuseppe Joseph DiMaggio would establish a new Pacific Coast League record by hitting safely in a total of 61-consecutive games, handily eclipsing the previous mark of 49 achieved by Jack Ness in 1915. This historic Type I photograph depicts the young DiMaggio immediately following his 50th consecutive base hit, which occurred on Jul 14, 1933, breaking Ness' record. Mayor Angelo Rossi of San Francisco is handing the 18-year-old DiMaggio a watch to commemorate the achievement as manager of the Seals, Ike Cavaney, and teammates look on. This, of course, occurred three years prior to DiMaggio's New York Yankees debut and nearly a decade before the 56-game hitting streak that would come to define the future Hall of Famer's Major League career. Approx 6.5" x 8.5" photo appears to have been trimmed from it's original dimensions but otherwise remains in excellent overall condition, with no visible signs of wear to emulsion surface. Verso includes credit stamping from Wide World along with another large stamp obscured by the paper caption and affixed with clear tape. Authenticated and encapsulated as a Type I photo by PSA/DNA. A fantastic companion piece to Lot 106 in this auction, a Seals Stadium program from the very same day.
