Tremendous San Francisco Seals official Seals Stadium scorecard dating to a July 14, 1933 game between the Seals and Los Angeles Angels of the Pacific Coast League. The highlight of the Seals' season that year was 18-year-old outfielder Joe DiMaggio, who led the team with a .340 batting average and 28 home runs. Though DiMaggio would become an American icon, known for his dignity and class on the field, as well as his incredible play, the single achievement with which he is best associated is his 56-game hitting streak in 1941. Not as many are aware that as a youngster in just his second season in the PCL, DiMaggio had an even longer streak.
On May 28, the young shortstop-turned-outfielder - still known as "De Maggio" by folks unable to spell his unusual name - doubled in the second game of a doubleheader, which began a streak that would last an astonishing 61 games. It is often said that the pressure and media scrutiny that DiMaggio was subjected to during his PCL streak helped to prepare him for the pressure he would face in New York in 1941, perhaps giving him an advantage. Regardless, both 56 and 61 game streaks are quite incredible achievements. By July 14, the date of this game, DiMaggio stood ready to break the PCL record for longest hitting streak, ripping a single on the first pitch he saw in the first inning to set a new record of 50 games - a streak he would continue for nearly two more weeks. Despite losing the game to Los Angeles, 7-6, DiMaggio was the subject of all the media coverage - in Los Angeles as well as in San Francisco.
This scorecard, which has been lightly scored in pencil, is in VG condition with wear and toning consistent with the grade. The scoring is light, in some cases faded beyond legibility, but with enough detail visible to identify the game. Light creasing and corner wear are evident, along with age-related toning at the edges. Display quality remains strong, a rare and vitally important document of a remarkable early achievement of one of the game's greatest and most iconic players - the Yankee Clipper.
