A companion piece to the 1927 Ty Cobb photo found elsewhere in this auction, Hall of Fame outfielder Zack Wheat is pictured in this stunning Type I photograph from Wide World. Standing in his sparkling new Philadelphia Athletics uniform, Wheat is posed in front of red-white-and-blue bunting indicative of Opening Day festivities. Indeed, this image appears to have been captured at Yankee Stadium on Opening Day in 1927, the very day both Zack Wheat and teammate Ty Cobb made their debuts for the Athletics after career-long stints with Detroit and Brooklyn respectively. A team packed with seven Hall of Famers in Ty Cobb, Eddie Collins, Mickey Cochrane, Jimmie Foxx, Lefty Grove, Al Simmons, and Zack Wheat, the 1927 Athletics finished 91-62, second only to one of the greatest team's of all time in the 1927 "Murderers' Row" New York Yankees. Fresh to the hobby 8" x 10" Type I photograph is of the highest image quality, boasting impeccable focus and near-perfect tonal contrast. Photo surface remains clean with typical gentle wear to corners on the left side. Verso displays credit stamping from Wide World with a handwritten identifier of Zack Wheat along the top edge. Authenticated and encapsulated as a Type I photo by PSA/DNA.
