"Handsome Henry" Boyle had the best season of his career in 1884 when he went 15-3 for the St. Louis Maroons of the National League. He led the NL in ERA in 1886, then spent the next three years devouring innings for the Indianapolis Hoosiers of the NL, averaging 343 IP each season. Boyle has four cards in the N172 set, with this example depicting the Hoosiers pitcher at the plate with his bat at the ready at a 60-degree angle.

Centering is slightly west on the canvas, with nicely sharp edges and corners for the grade. The colors are dark and bold, and the text remains easily legible more than 130 years after issuance. There is some snow on the front, but the (MK) qualifier is due to some faint writing on the back which does not affect the front. As is typically the case, PSA shows how grading companies miss the boat on N172 cards, worrying about things like minor writing on the reverse while paying little attention to image quality, which, in this case, is superior.

PSA has only ever graded 8 total examples of this 1887 N172 Old Judge, with only four receiving a higher grade than the VG 3 (MK) offered here.
