John Anthony "Honest Jack" Boyle was primarily a catcher for the St. Louis Browns of the American Association from 1887 through 1891, except for 1890 when he played for the Chicago White Stockings of the Players League. He struggled defensively early in his career, but led the league with 11 double plays made at Catcher during each season in 1888, 1889, and 1891. Boyle has five cards in
the N172 set, but this example depicting the St. Louis catcher wearing his cap with his bat in his right hand and his left hand at his side, has the lowest graded population, with this being the only example assessed by PSA.
Centering
is gorgeous, but that seems to be due to a slight irregular cut, which explains the card's technical grade of Authentic. The colors are dark and bold, and the text remains easily legible more than 130 years after issuance, with some very light staining on the front, though not encroaching on the actual image.
