Pair of 1930 glass magic lantern slides featuring New York Yankees Hall of Famers Lou Gehrig, Babe Ruth, and Jacob Ruppert. Black paper borders surrounding the 3.25" x 4" translucent slides remain fully intact with glass surfaces impressively clean for their age. A paper label remains affixed along left edge of both slides, though no markings are present. Includes: 1) Babe Ruth signs his $80,000 contract for the 1930 season as Jacob Ruppert looks on. A related image from the same moment appeared published in the March 12, 1930 issue of the New York Times, which we have provided for reference. 2) Lou Gehrig, Babe Ruth, and Jacob Ruppert stand with new Yankees manager, Bob Shawkey. Accompanying the men is pilot of an airship which can be seen behind them. According to the March 22, 1930 issue of the New York Daily News, Ruppert had travel to Yankees spring camp in St. Petersburg via blimp, providing Ruth with "bundles of new bats." Associated Daily News article provided for reference. These slides originate from the estate of former Cleveland Plain Dealer staff photographer Frank W. Smith, who traveled with the Cleveland Naps to their spring facilities for many years during the 1910's. Two of close to sixty original glass magic lantern slides offered in our spring auction from the original photographer's collection. All slides from this collection have been professionally imaged and winning bidders will receive both the slides and a one-of-a-kind 8" x 10" archival quality print with their shipment.
