This example depicts catcher Fred Payne of the White Sox having just completed his throwing motion in front of a yellow sky and green grass background. Payne's dark blue pants, jersey, and cap provide great contrast, with each of the card's colors remaining bold. While the right corners show some softness, the left corners are sharp for the grade.
The centering is north and west on the canvas, which explains the card's technical grade, but the back is remarkably clean and may even present nicer than the beautiful front. PSA has
only ever graded 18 total examples of this Old Mill back version of the
Payne, with
only TWO receiving a
higher grade than the VG-EX 4 offered here.
Frederick Thomas Payne played in 334 career games over six MLB seasons for the Tigers and White Sox, primarily as a catcher. His best season was his rookie year, 1906, during which Payne hit .270 in 72 games.
