Don Heffner was a utility infielder who came up with the Yankees in 1934 then saw his baseball fortunes sink when they traded him to the Browns in 1938. He then was shunted off to the Athletics in the middle of the 1943 season and concluded with the Tigers in 1944 after yet another trade. He's signed his 1939 Play Ball card in blue ballpoint and it's nicely done, with some ink flow stutters barely visible.  PSA/DNA have assessed a grade of 8 for the autograph and this is one of but two signed 1939 Play Ball's for Heffner in their pop report, with the other having the "sample" back.  The card exhibits paper loss on the reverse, from the long-ago scrapbook removal by the family of the original collector. The card originates from the Shibe Park collection of autographed cards, an original owner collection carefully collected by a teenage boy who, in 1939 and 1940, obtained many autographs from players arriving at the train station near Shibe Park, and continued for many years to obtain signatures in person and through the mail.
