Mel Almada played Centerfield for four teams over seven seasons and was a Brown for only two months in 1939, before he was mercifully dealt to Brooklyn. Almada was the first native Mexican to play in the majors and was a favorite son of his adopted hometown of Los Angeles, even appearing in a handful of movies in the 1930's. This 1939 Play Ball is graded VG-EX 4 with some spots of foxing evident, although they do not affect his movie-star looking image. The signature is in black ink and look fantastic, with a grade of PSA/DNA 10 resulting. The card originates from the Shibe Park collection of autographed cards, an original owner collection carefully collected by a teenage boy who, in 1939 and 1940, obtained many autographs from players arriving at the train station near Shibe Park, and continued for many years to obtain signatures in person and through the mail.
