Merrill "Pinky" May was a Third Baseman for the Phillies over five seasons who went on to a long career as a minor league manager. He's also the father of Milt May and was in his rookie season in 1939 when Play Ball captured his famed determination in this batting pose. Sign "M May" in a somewhat rolling style and in blue ink, PSA/DNA MINT 9 is the grade for his autograph. Some paper loss is evident on the reverse, the product of long-ago scrapbook removal.The card originates from the Shibe Park collection of autographed cards, an original owner collection carefully collected by a teenage boy who, in 1939 and 1940, obtained many autographs from players arriving at the train station near Shibe Park, and continued for many years to obtain signatures in person and through the mail.
