Interesting Gray Studios portrait photo of third baseman Billy Nash, an excellent fielder with a .275 lifetime average across a 15-year career, mostly spent in Boston. The photo corresponds with card #340-2 in the N172 Old Judge Cigarettes issue. As with the case of many studios that provided Goodwin & Co with photography for their baseball cards, Gray produced cabinet photos featuring the images. This one is particularly interesting, an early "error" card that features the photo pasted onto the reverse of the mount. The mount is actually backwards and upside down, the studio advertisement located on the top of the card reverse. The photo itself is strong, with some light areas of soiling. Writing is evident on the reverse, as are some paper remnants and an adhesive stain from clear tape applied long ago. Some chipping and creasing is visible on the mount as well. In a case like this, however, condition is less important than rarity, coupled with the unique manufacturing defect of the cabinet.
