Initially intended to be attached to the front of a pin-back button that was never produced all the 1967 Topps discs were printed with gold foil backgrounds (which were intended to be waste after the circular foregrounds were cut from the sheet) and the country of origin Japan folded underneath the rim of the button. While the buttons themselves never materialized (nor did they materialize when Topps produced a second set of "discs" in 1968) some individual proofs made it out into the collecting world.Since these were never commercially issued all the 1967 Topps discs are essentially proofs. As such PSA has elected not to assign numerical grades to this issue (although at some point in PSA"s history they elected to assign a grade of 7 to a single Juan Marichal proof). SGC has decided otherwise electing to assign grades to the proofs in this case (though they do not grade other proofs). The inconsistency among grading companies does not however negate the extreme scarcity of this issue. Just 38 copies have passed through the hands of the two grading companies as of this writing; that we are offering two of those 38 copies in this auction is a pleasure. Publishing population data on an issue like this is silly; this is the only Denny McLain that has ever been seen by PSA; just two have crossed through SGC"s hands in their 14-year history. An unbelievably scarce and difficult-to-find 1960s test issue an outstanding opportunity for a type card collector to cross a tough one off the list.
