Striking 8" x 10" photograph of career Boston Dove/Rustler/Brave (1908-1912) Al Mattern warming up on the sidelines at Hilltop Park. This is a fantastic look at the spitballer's period uniform and southpaw delivery as he tosses prior to a contest with the Giants in 1911. From April to June that season the Giants were forced to call the Highlanders ballpark home after a fire ravaged the grandstand at the Polo Grounds. Unfortunately for Mattern he wound up toiling for two teams with some of the worst regular season records of all-time - the 1909 Doves (45-108-2) and the 1911 Rustlers (44-107-5). Photo itself presents beautifully with chipping to the corners and a small patch of paper has flaked away over Mattern's left shoulder, though this is unobtrusive against the white sky. A crease is present in the top left corner. Verso exhibits light toning with two identical Charles Conlon stamps present along with Conlon's handwritten identification of Mattern. Photo is fresh to the hobby and originates from the archives of Photo File, Inc. where it has been stored for several decades until this offering. Guaranteed Type 1.
