Washington Senators superstar hurler Walter Johnson is captured here in this 5" x 7” portrait press photo by George Grantham Bain. Unlike their competitors, standard procedure for Bain's news photo service was to produce their images as contact prints, accurately reproducing exactly what the photographer saw through his viewfinder, without cropping. Due to the contact print-style, all notations etched into the original negative are also present in Bain's photographic prints — this photo of Walter Johnson is no different as his full name and Bain’s filing information remain at top. Photo surface is clean of blemishes though there is a small piece missing from the top left corner. Verso includes a Culver Pictures paper tag and various Bain stamps, with the oldest dating to the 1916-1918 era. Encapsulated as a Type 1 photo by PSA/DNA.
