Quite possibly the best-known and most highly sought after of all baseball-related advertising pieces of its era the spectacular Tuxedo Tobacco advertising display featuring Christy Mathewson is truly a work of art. Featuring an illustration of the well-known Charles M. Conlon portrait the colorful 20 3/4" x 11" trolley car-type sign boasts rich gold red and green coloration. The first piece from a large grouping of display items from a world-class sports collection that we will be auctioning over the next year this example has been in the possession of our consignor for some time out of the eye of the hobby. The piece presents extremely well though as is the case with virtually all the known Tuxedo advertising signs benefits from several areas of professional restoration - primarily some small tears and holes that have been repaired and most notably in the form of very careful and clean inpainting at the bottom-right corner to restore Matty's left shoulder. Several minor areas of wear are evident notably at the edges and corners as one would expect from a piece of this sort. The piece has been displayed for some time dry-mounted with a cellophane wrap which we have removed so we could better inspect it; the wrap effectively protected the sign for many years. A truly exceptional advertising display piece one of the most scarce and desirable of its kind an introduction to the forthcoming sale of a tremendous collection that we will be bringing to the hobby over the course of our next several auctions.
