The "Black Sox Scandal" of 1919/1920 has long been a subject of fascination among hobbyists; memorabilia associated with the "eight men out" and other related figures continue to command pricing and demand akin to the most popular players of the era with subjects like Buck Weaver Ed Cicotte and Chick Gandil fetching prices comparable with some of the game's greatest Hall of Famers. None however have attracted the intense demand as Joe Jackson; prices for his cards and memorabilia routinely break records at auction. While memorabilia related to Jackson's career come to auction frequently it is with far less frequency that the hobby sees memorabilia with direct relation to the scandal itself. Such is the case with this wonderful piece; a clean 5" x 7" Type 1 photograph taken in 1919 but issued in late 1920. The photo itsef is lovely; one of very few known Jackson portraits depicting the superstar in his White Sox uniform staring directly at the camera. What makes the photo special however is the slug on the reverse which makes direct reference to Jackson's indictment related to the scandal. The indictments were handed down on September 28 1920; the date 9/29/20 is written on the reverse in grease pencil amidst numerous editorial markings stamps and paper remnants from substantial use. The International News Service photo measures 5" x 7" and displays extremely well; some remnants of masking agent are faintly visible around the image of Jackson. Several pinholes are evident at the corners and mild creasing and paper loss along with a few slight tears are all evident around the perimeter of the photo. The image of Jackson however remains strong and clear. The photo shows clear signs of significant editorial use yet presents extremely well. Photos of Joe Jackson are particularly rare. One of Shoeless Joe's better-known photos Type 1 examples of it are virtually never found at public auction. An exceptional document of the 1919 World Series scandal a beautiful portrait of its most famous subject editorial slugs and markings dating the piece right to September 29 1920 - the day baseball lost its innocence.
