Catcher "Deacon" McGuire played his first major league game in 1884. 28 years later McGuire went 1-for-3 in a game with the 1912 Detroit Tigers. In between he accumulated 1 750 hits in a career spanning 26 seasons a .278 batting average and a reputation for gentlemanly play that earned him his nickname. In 1934 the National League voted to extend lifetime passes to all retired players with ten years or more in the majors. According to his SABR biography McGuire was overlooked. After writing the league he was awarded the pass in 1936 initially receiving a paper pass and later receiving a gold metal pass. Presented here is the first paper pass along with the note that accompanied the gold pass as well as the envelope in which it came. The pass itself presents in outstanding condition with some paper pulls on the reverse from mounting tape. All three pieces do exhibit some light soiling but nothing to interfere with their aesthetic appearance. Three excellent pieces recognizing the service of one of the 19th Century's longest-running players.
