The name Archibald "Moonlight" Graham evokes strong emotions among baseball fans. A central character in the W.P. Kinsella novel Shoeless Joe as well as in the film Field of Dreams Graham embodies the warmth and charm of America"s pastime the father-son games of catch and evenings of listening to games on the radio that helped define the game in its golden age. The real-life Graham was much like the fictional one; the Giants outfielder managed to play in one 1905 game without an at bat his one and only game in the major leagues - a true "cup of coffee." In 1906 Graham obtained his medical license and began practicing in Chisholm Minnesota where he continued to practice for half a century until his death in 1965.Of course this is not the real "Moonlight" Graham"s bat. The center brand on this bulky LVS bat dates it between 1921 and 1930 long after Graham had moved to Chisholm and began serving the community. When it was consigned to us we debated whether or not to even use "Moonlight" Graham"s name in this description. But the magic of baseball and the spirit of Love of the Game has to seep into this auction somewhere and the mystery surrounding this bat and the famous name inscribed on its barrel is as good a place as any.In reality two players named "Graham" played in the majors during the period when this model of bat was manufactured: Roy Graham a catcher for the White Sox in 1922 and 23 and Kyle "Skinny" Graham a pitched for the Braves from 1924-26 and Tigers in 1929. Additionally minor league records exist of dozens of players named Graham like Dennis Graham of the Homestead Grays of the old Negro Leagues Pat Graham of the 1924 Topeka Senators of the Western Association Frank Graham of the 1924 Galveston Sand Crabs of the Texas League Arthur Graham of the 1931 Cumberland Colts of the Mid-Atlantic League or any number of players named "Graham" whose first names have been lost to history. The 1922 Okmulgee Drillers of the Western Association had a Graham at first base. The 1921 St. Petersburg Saints of the Florida State League had a Graham behind the plate. The 1923 Little Rock Travelers of the Southern Association had a Graham who won 13 games for them that year.
