By 1916 The Georgia Peach had run off a staggering stretch of eight consecutive seasons with batting averages of .368 or better; the only thing more staggering is that he would reel off three more (all over .380) from 1917 to 1920 and accomplish the task three more times in the final eight years of his career. hitting .323 in his final season. Long after Cobb's career was over a fan asked the great Lefty O'Doul how well he would fare in the "modern" game. O'Doul responded by saying "Oh about the same as Mays maybe .340 or something like that." When asked how O'Doul could say Cobb was such a great player but that he would hit significantly below his career average in the modern era he responded by saying "Well you have to take into consideration the man is 73 years old." This extremely strong Type 1 photo depicts Cobb in 1916 a close-up image of the troubled outfielder smiling at the camera ostensibly not a care in the world. The photo itself is in VG condition with some moderate creasing and edge wear typical editorial markings and paper remnants (and the PSA/DNA sticker) on the reverse. An exceptional photo.
