One of the greatest athletes in American history Jim Thorpe's six-year baseball career was probably more hype than anything else; his lifetime .252 batting average with three teams was relatively nondescript. Despite this it is his football and Olympic careers that built his legend and made him one of the most desirable subjects in the hobby. Presented here is a well-known original photograph by the legendary Charles Conlon measuring 7" x 9.5" complete with Conlon's markings on the reverse. Widely collected in the hobby our recent sale of a Carlisle Indians snapshot featuring a tiny image of Thorpe for more than $3000 solidified our understanding of his enormous legend. This example which suffers from some very minor edge wear and overall surface wear consistent with its age yet nothing to distract significantly from its extraordinary visual appeal. It should be noted that the PSA/DNA letter for this photo identifies it as "1910s" because they cannot take into consideration the handwritten dating on the reverse. The uniform worn by Thorpe based on its design could date the photo either to 1915 or 1917 (the only difference between the two seasons being the color of the pinstripes). Though the handwriting on the reverse dates the photo to 1917 it is possible that the photo dates to 1915 hence the 1910s designation on the LOA. A lovely photograph of one of the greatest athletes ever taken by one of the greatest sports photographers ever. Full LOA from PSA/DNA.
