At the conclusion of the 1927 World Series the Yankees' sluggers Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig were so popular that Ruth's manager Christy Walsh organized a nationwide barnstorming tour so that fans across the country could see them play. The "Bustin' Babes" and "Larrupin' Lous" consisted of Ruth and Gehrig teaming up with local players along the way. Nearly a quarter million baseball fans mostly in cities without major league teams came out to see the show. Presented is an incredible example of the iconic photo that was used as the promotional photo for the tour. This example however is not the "official souvenir" photo so often seen in the hobby signed by one or both players - this is a Type I News Service photo and easily the finest example we have ever seen. The crispness and clarity of the photo is second to none the 8" x 10" photo exhibiting virtually no wear to the image itself and only minor wrinkles and edge imperfections present. This photo taken at a slightly different angle than the souvenir photo made available to fans was distributed to the Milwaukee Journal and is perhaps the finest of its kind. The reverse does contain the appropriate stamps and notations and the slug (dated 10-12-27) is still present though unattached. A simply beautiful museum-quality specimen. Full LOA from PSA/DNA.
