When it comes to Abner Doubleday's role in the creation of baseball the evidence is clear: he had none. And yet his name is as synonomous with "baseball" as hot dogs and shortstops due entirely to the Mills Commission a group formed in the early 1900s with a goal of proving the origin of the sport in the US was purely an American one. Cubs president Albert Spalding was behind the Commission which began the "Doubleday Myth " which stated that Union officer Abder Doubleday created baseball in Cooperstown NY in 1839. The story was that then mining engineer Abner Graves claimed that Doubleday invented the game and though the myth was largely disproven later Doubleday still receives credit by many for being the father of the game. Presented here is a CdV featuring Doubleday in his military uniform labeled on the reverse as "Brigadier-General " the position to which Doubleday was promoted in 1862. The CdV was manufactured by Charles Taber & Co. of New Bedford Mass. Taber's company began manufacturing in 1862 and continued under that name until 1893. The CdV has been graded FAIR 20 by SGC due largely to edge wear and general soiling though the image quality is quite strong without the foxing so prevalent in similar Doubleday CdVs. The reverse while clean does exhibit some staining as well as erased writing underneath the back printing.
