Exceptional 1982 TCMA pre-rookie card of Pro Football Hall of Famer John Elway. Elway a student at Stanford University was a two-sport star in baseball and football and was taken in the second round of the 1981 MLB draft by the Yankees. He played for the 1982 Oneonta Yankees and in 42 games hit .318 with 4 home runs and 25 RBI as an outfielder. After being taken by the Baltimore Colts in the quarterback-heavy 1983 NFL draft Elway refused to join the team threatening to join the Yankees full-time if he wasn't traded. Eventually he was traded to Denver and the rest was history. This card was found in a photo album of minor league cards as part of our Texas find. The hobbyist who built that collection Charlie Young was an avid collector of minor league issues dating to the 1970s and stored them away by the thousands. Unfortunately neither PSA nor SGC will grade this card due to the large number of counterfeits; it thus became our first-ever Beckett submission at the 2016 National in Atlantic City.
