Wonderful Yankees New Era 6-panel cap manufactured between 1978-83. Graded Authentic by MEARS the size 7 3/8 cap exhibits soiling and wear consistent with heavy use featuring the number 54 written on the under brim in vintage black marker which under a digital microscope appears to have been applied prior to the cap's use and wear. Though the cap's date of manufacture ranges between 1978-83 we believe it to date sometime between 1978-81 as a result of its provenance: the cap was given to our consignor a longtime colleague and friend of former Yankees first baseman and designated hitter Jim Spencer. During a discussion at the ballpark our consignor asked Spencer for a cap from Gossage to add to his collection; Spencer retreated into the clubhouse and several minutes later emerged with this cap. The cap has remained in our consignor's collection since. A wonderful official Yankees cap worn by one of the franchise's greatest Hall of Fame pitchers. LOA from MEARS.
