West Virginia native Hal Greer attended his hometown Marshall University the first African-American to play major college basketball in West Virginia and went on to be drafted by the Syracuse Nationals of the NBA in 1958. Greer went on to become a ten-time All-Star with the Nationals (who later became the Philadelphia 76ers) scoring more than 20 000 points during his career. Inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1982 Greer remains the only African American athlete from West Virginia to be enshrined in a major sports Hall of Fame. At the conclusion of his sophomore year at Marshall Greer was awarded Most Valuable Player the award presented by a local fraternal organization the Abdul Temple of Huntington West Virginia. The trophy standing approximately 15 1/2" high by 12 1/2" wide is made of wood and brass the figural basketball player atop the award removable but intact. The plaque at the trophy's center reads as follows: Most Valuable Player AwardPresented ToHal Greer By Abdul Temple 133 A.E.A.D.N.M.S.of Huntington W. Va. For outstanding achievementsin the field of sportsat Marshall College 1956-1957 The plaque itself has developed a dull patina over the years but is legible and likely could be cleaned. Otherwise despite the removable figure atop the trophy it remains in outstanding condition.
