Due to their means of distribution 1920s strip cards are simply not supposed to grade high. Produced in strips on flimsy paper the W516 series of strip cards is actually three different sets with slightly different artwork and lettering featuring colorized player images with white borders. This an example of the W516-2-1 subset features "ex-pitcher" Christy Mathewson five years after his retirement and just four years before his passing. Susceptible to miscuts and outright tearing of the cards from their strips by 1920s youngsters these cards are often found torn wrinkled and faded. In contrast this Mathewson has been preserved in excellent condition carefully cut from its strip and still in EX condition. First-tier Hall of Famers in this type of condition are not easy to come by; as very few examples have graded this high. An outstanding opportunity to add a beautiful strip card of one of the game"s most popular and enduring names.Population DataSGC Population: 12 total graded 1 at this level 4 higherPSA Population: 18 total graded 0 at this level 1 higher
