During an early 1970s game the padding at the top of Al Kaline's helmet came off during a game. After the team discarded it into the trash heap batboy Dennis Clotworthy asked the equipment manager if he could take the helmet as a keepsake. Given that the helmet was unusable the equipment manager was more than happy to oblige Dennis' request. The helmet a size 7 1/4 American Baseball Cap helmet remains in outstanding condition with some signs of wear (particularly some paint transfers at the top). The aforementioned interior padding at the top of the helmet is missing (the glue stain is still present) and the padded band around the inside is intact. According to Clotworthy size 7 1/4 is actually slightly large for Kaline as he attempted to wear his helmet on top of his cap during this period and thus needed a little extra room inside. The brim has been signed by Kaline in gold paint pen though the signature is slightly smudged near the "A " it presents very well. COA from James Spence Authentication for the autograph.
