One of the unheralded stars of the late 1940s and early 1950s Sid Gordon played 13 seasons with the Giants Braves and Pirates clubbing 202 lifetime home runs with a .283 lifetime batting average despite missing more than two full seasons due to WWII. A two-time All-Star Gordon hit .299 with 30 home runs in 1948 one of three seasons in which the fan favorite would drive in 100 runs or more. The slugging outfielder was nicknamed the "Solid Man" due to his powerful build and dependable performance. Well-regarded and amiable the Brooklyn native was along with teammate Mel Ott and several other Giants ridiculed by manager Leo Durocher when "The Lip" made his famous statement "Nice guys finish last." Gordon was also one of the few Jewish players of his era and was subjected to a good deal of anti-Semitic bench jockeying during his career. Over the course of his career he helped a number of Jewish groups and organizations by lending his name to their causes and today remains a favorite among collectors of Jewish athletes. Presented here is a fascinating collection of cards and memorabilia related to Gordon assembled by a fan and distant relative. It contains a number of scarce card types and rare memorabilia an outstanding type card collection that illustrates how popular and well-regarded the Solid Man was during his era. The collection includes 29 different cards including 21 from Gordon's playing days including: 1) 1947 Tip Top Bread (P); 2) 1947 Bond Bread (P); 3) 1948 Bowman #27 (VG); 4) 1948 Eureka Sportsstamp (EX-MT); 5) 1948 Leaf #131 (EX); 6) 1950 Bowman #201 (F); 7) 1950 R423 (G-VG); 8) 1950 Bowman #109 (VG/EX); 9) 1950 Drake's (F); 10) 1951 Bowman #19 (F); 11) 1951 Topps Red Back #2 (EX); 12) 1952 Bowman #60 (VG/EX); 13) 1952 Topps # 267 (VG/EX); 14) 1952 Red Man #6 (F); 15) 1953 Bowman Color #5 (VG); 16) 1953 Johnston Cookies Braves #23 (VG); 17) 1953 Topps #117 (EX); 18) 1954 Bowman #11 (EX-MT); 19) 1954 Dan Dee Potato Chips (VG/EX); 20) 1955 Bowman #163 (VG); 21) 1950s Team Issue (VG/EX); 22) 1974 TCMA (EX-MT); 23) 1977 HRT/RES #112 (EX-MT); 24) 1979 TCMA "Baseball History" (EX-MT); 25) 1983 TCMA "1943 Playball" (EX-MT); 26) 1985
