It was during the 1956 World Series that Dodgers owner Walter O'Malley sent word to Los Angeles officials attending the Series that he was interested in discussing a possible move to their city. O'Malley had become embroiled in the politics of building a better more modern ballpark in New York than the Dodgers' home at Ebbets Field and he was looking for a fallback option. The city offered him an opportunity to purchase land on which to build a new ballpark. While O'Malley began construction on his new Los Angeles stadium the team opened their first West Coast season at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum a huge old stadium that had hosted the 1932 Summer Olympics. The team's first game at the Coliseum pitted the Dodgers against another New York expatriate the San Francisco Giants in front of more than 78 000 fans. The Dodgers won the game 6-5 the team's first hit delivered by star outfielder and fan favorite Duke Snider. Presented is a series of mementos from that game including a program ticket stub and full (but torn) ticket. The items were the possession of a Southern California resident and former minor league baseball player (the same gentleman who owned the Los Angeles Angels jersey and cap featured elsewhere in this auction) who attended the game and saved the items for his entire life. They remained among his personal memorabilia until consigned to Love of the Game by his son for this auction. The program displays extremely well despite being quite delicate toned and well-loved over the years. The game itself was scored in both pencil and ink the centerfold pages having become detached from their staples over time. The tickets all present very well - the Row 60 Seat 18 stub in very strong condition save for an indentation from a paper clip the same indentation which is visible on both ends of the accompanying Seat 17 ticket. Despite this the display qualities of all three stubs are excellent. An exceptional collection of memorabilia which memorializes the Dodgers' first game in Los Angeles and thus documents the late-1950s westward expansion of baseball.
