The 1956 World Series is perhaps best known for the Game Five perfect game by Don Larsen one of the most famous games in World Series history. The series between the Yankees and Dodgers however went the full seven games the Yankees winning the final four to capture the championship. Game 7 followed a dramatic game six that saw the Dodgers tie the series with a dramatic walk-off single by Jackie Robinson to decide the game 1-0 in ten innings. The series' final game however was fairly easy for the Yankees a 9-0 victory that included two home runs by catcher Yogi Berra. The final out of the inning was recorded by Yankee pitcher Johnny Kucks who struck out Dodgers hero Jackie Robinson. This collection of six wire photos (depicting 12 different photos) chronicles that final pitch a swinging strike three from Robinson Berra's chasing down what appears to be a dropped ball and the Yankees' championship celebration on the field. Of particular note more so than perhaps the ending of the World Series however is the fact that this represented Robinson's final at bat in the major leagues. At the end of the 1956 season Robinson was traded to the New York Giants (who also were to leave New York) a trade that would never be consummated as Robinson retired in the pages of Look magazine during that offseason. An outstanding display depicting not only the final out of one of the game's most memorable World Series but also the final swing of the most important athlete ever to play American sports.
