Future Hall of Fame manager had just begun managing the Boston Braves in April of 1946 when he mailed this postcard likely fron Spring Training in Birmingham Alabama. He remained with the Braves through 1949 returning briefly in 1950 and 51. He remained with the Braves as a scout where he was responsible for signing Hank Aaron. He was elected into the Hall as a manager in 2008. Though we typically do not grade autographs opting only for authentication we were so impressed with the beauty of Southworth's signature and inscription on this government postcard that we asked SGC to assign it a numerical grade. They returned the postcard with a grade of NM-MT 8 a testament to its clarity and legibility. What we like the best about it however is Southworth's elegant capital "B " which we get to see four times here: once in "Billy " and then again for "Boston Braves Baseball." Simply a beautiful postcard with the relatively scarce signature of a Hall of Famer who passed away in 1969.
