Frank "Shag" Shaughnessy is well-known to prewar baseball collectors because his card is one of the tougher Southern Leaguers in the T206 set. The reality however is that Shaughnessy only played in nine major league games one with the 1905 Senators and eight with the 1908 Athletics. His minor league career was much longer a 19-year career during which he played for 16 different teams hitting .289 lifetime. Shaughnessy's athletic career however involved far more than baseball playing. He compiled a 1148-1012 record in 19 years as a minor league manager. He was a General Manager of the Montreal Royals between 1932 and 24 and became president of the International League between 1936 and 1960. Shaughnessy was very involved with football as well. Team captain at Notre Dame his senior year he coached at Yale Cornell and Washington and Lee University. He was the first professional coach hired in Canadian University football coaching while playing minor league baseball in the summers in Ottawa. He is largely thought to have introduced the forward pass to Canadian college football. He was inducted into the Canadian Football Hall of Fame in 1963. Additionally Shaughnessy served as the manager of the Ottawa Senators ice hockey team between 1914 and 16 and coached both men's and women's hockey at McGill University between 1919 and 1927. With all that in mind presented here is a stunning studio portrait of Shaughnessy from the Blank & Stoller studio of New York. Depicting Shaughnessy in suit and tie against a charcoal backdrop the photo is signed and inscribed in fountain pen by Shaughnessy along the bottom border of the photo. An absolutely beautiful photograph framed by a spectacularly dark and bold signature of a true sports Renaissance man. Full LOA from James Spence Authentication.
