A clean, detailed studio pose of centerfielder John Leighton, who appears on a team (Omaha) that he never took the field for, as they released John just before the start of the Western Association's 1889 season. Once cut loose, he latched onto Quincy (IL) of the Central Interstate League and continued to play for 2-3 teams per year, no doubt following paychecks and playing opportunities. He continued playing pro ball closer to his home region of New England into the 20th century, surely coaching younger players in-between days roaming the outfield.
The SGC GD 2 grade has a lot going for it, with above-average photo clarity, even borders, and modest corner wear for something so old. Toning on the reverse contributes to this low technical grade without detracting from its strong front image. The SGC population report shows just one graded #276-3, and this is it, with PSA adding but one more! A satisfying card for something so scarce.
